They had been with him now, for some time. And now, as the time of Rosh Hashanah approached, a handful – some men, some women – approached Him. As they did, He turned, with the faintest of smiles; a certain look in His eyes.
‘Rabbi’, they said, ‘we watch the things that you do, and marvel,’ said one. Another, appearing a bit nervous and shy to speak so freely, said: ‘We, well, we see you vanish before the dawn to greet the earth, and in safe distance, have followed, to witness you move as if to a music we cannot hear, then motionless you stand face uplifted, eyes open, palms turned to the heavens, and even from such distance we are mystified, yet enchanted.’
He turns from them, and in a few steps’ perches on a large rock just at the edge of the water, gazing out across it. Has he heard us? Puzzled glances among them, until one speaks up.
‘Rabbi, how do you do the things that you do? Please, please teach us these things.’
His head turns slightly from the sea; the smile has grown. He had long since learned to give only when asked, for until then, there is no space for what could be given, to be truly received.
He stood, arms outstretched, His eyes closing, and turning His palms upward He visibly received the angel of air deeply into his body; he seemed to hold it for just a moment, and then resounded from Him one long sound, a word we knew, but, somehow, it felt like nothing we knew, at all. Or, perhaps, not yet.
And so began His instruction to them, the first more formal, or structured guidance. It would come to be a journey – for those willing to engage what He insisted was a living practice that – while the mind may think it understands – cannot be grasped by the thinking mind as much as it much become one’s breath, one’s life, one’s living… Way.
What He would begin to guide them into gradually came to be encapsulated, many years later, into what we – far removed from Him not only in time, but even more so in our paradigm, our view of, and understanding of Reality (this Western intellectual and rational paradigm) – have come to know as the ‘Lord’s Prayer’.
But when we truly immerse in His own language of Aramaic, and especially as we begin not merely to recite it, but to feel it moving within us, gradually, bringing it more and more into the very fabric of our lives, we find within it a transforming power.
His followers’ request that He teach them is given in the Bible as ‘teach us to pray.’ For especially the modern Western world, prayer is something recited, words memorized, and – at best – thought of briefly.
But prayer, for Jeshua in His native middle eastern world, embedded in the rich, and subtle nuances of Aramaic, to pray meant far more to ‘come into attunement with; to flow immersed within; to become a ‘living prayer’.
My own experience with the prayer began when I suddenly felt to ask Him a question about the prayer. He responded by suddenly, powerfully, giving it – in Aramaic, a language that I had not heard. It resounded so profoundly, like a large gong had been struck powerfully, the echoing resonance continuing and continuing. At His suggestion, I began resting in its sounds just as He had given them. Accessing them was easy, it was as if they were in every cell, waiting for me. It took several months before I could begin to speak them.
Yet, as I struggled to understand them, He would say little, suggesting I simply immerse, feel, allowing the meaning to reveal itself. Later, as insights came, I began to research various Aramaic scholars, and gradually came to feel that I was perhaps not becoming unhinged, but rather, discovering something, something that felt haunting, something I was not searching for, but that seemed to have been searching for me.
It is both a responsibility, and a blessing, as I try – in this new course in the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer – to convey it to you as He first gave it: as Living Practice. Bring simply your ‘little willingness’, mixed with a dash of exploration for things like ‘breath’, and ‘feeling’, and even ‘movement’. And along the way we will discover that the Lord’s Prayer as we have come to know it, is at best a pale reflection of the original, that indeed, it has been Lost in Translation, quite literally! And with it, fundamental paradigms of Reality have been replaced with a ‘western metaphysic’ that does little justice to the Prayer, and prevents the real, transformative depth of it, to penetrate us as it was intended: as living, transformative, practice. And I thank you for making this journey with me!
SO, just what is this Course?
Over a nine-week period, we will immerse in each line of the Prayer, for each is the growing basis for what comes after, beginning with the very first word He uttered to his followers that day so long ago.
You will be provided, line by line, audio recording to help you learn and feel and integrate the Prayer AS we immerse in weekly Study Notes. Yes, there will be some ‘mental understanding’ of words, but even these will be given in a way that helps you contemplate, breathe into, and be touched in new ways, as their meaning opens up closed places in us.
There will be simple, guided ‘Wonder Questions’ to help you integrate the Prayer, word by word, line by line, each building on the prior, into your life. Just here is where we find what is strikingly different about the Aramaic Jeshua/Jesus and the many Western versions of Him: He is not interested in abstract metaphysics, nor intellectual expertise, but in, one could say, visceral, concrete, moment to moment transformation of how we may rest in our True Source, the ‘God’ that is forever Here and Now, move in the flow of this Union, and live in such a way that we become increasingly the ‘living channels’ of that Light.
The Prayer reveals three Phases, or holy ‘trinities’.
Along with the weekly video Lesson, audio support, and Study Notes, at the end of each Trinity, we will gather ‘live’ for both practice and Q&A, yet these will be done in the unique flavor of the prayer itself, a way to deepen the practice of the prayer itself, letting it, via breath and inquiry open us to our own inner wisdom, the very flow that emerges FROM real prayer: attunement to the Wholeness of Love’s Unified Field.
By the end of the Course, which will be yours to cherish, and return to again and again, you will:
- be able to speak the prayer as He gave it to me
- have opened to the astonishing meaning locked away from us for far too long
- feel it becoming a living practice, a living attunement, grounded increasingly into the moments and transitions of your life.
And more than this, you will be discovering a precious cornerstone of a genuine spirituality (beyond and not contained by religious dogma and belief): Presence. The real kind. How to access it, rest in it, and begin to let a new depth of love, and of wisdom, help you to meet each moment, as life flows from beginnings to endings, a rich and extraordinary revelation of Life, Itself.
You may come to feel as astonished as those children above, opening a treasure chest to what waits within it!
When did this course start?
Our official start date for this immersion was the 7th September, so we are nearing the completion. However, you have lifetime access to the lessons and materials, therefore can join the online community and begin at any time.
Once this immersion is complete, we will be setting the course up so that people can register and begin automatically.
So, on to the Nuts and Bolts of registration!
FIRST, the Course is offered on a donation basis. Because many ask us, I would share that for a Course like this I would normally suggest a price of $495 USD AND, what matters is that you pause, take a few good breaths, and simply ask within what may feel appropriate for you in the context of your life. No one sincere to immerse in the Course, is turned away.
Your donation helps support us at Way of Mastery, and, in this time of COVID, a substantial portion will be going to help the Balinese people; they have no federal social safety nets, and being locked down, 80% of their economy has been devastated. So, in advance, we thank you for helping us, to help others.
Blessings to you,
